Welcome to Southgate Progressive Synagogue

A lively, friendly and inclusive community in North London with an emphasis on family and friends, living, learning, praying and socialising together in a caring environment

Our Vision

We endeavour to be a centre and focal-point for the local Jewish community and their families, whether religious or secular. Following the Liberal Jewish tradition, we strive to be inclusive in everything we do. Our vision is to create and grow all parts of our community and continually strive to have respect for views different from our own and have compassion for those within our community, as well as those outside.

  • The Sixth Rabbi Harry Martin Jacobi Memorial Lecture

    Sunday April 6, 2:30 pm

Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein was ordained at Leo Baeck College (London) in 1970 and was the rabbi of the Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue (now The Ark Synagogue) until his retirement in 2008. He then became its Emeritus Rabbi.

For 20 years Rabbi Goldstein was in charge of the Union of Liberal & Progressive Synagogue’s Education Department. He has wide experience in Jewish education and has published a series of textbooks.  He has also co-edited Liberal Judaism prayer books.

In 1978, Rabbi Goldstein initiated his congregation’s connection with Czechoslovak Jewry and has led many visits by groups to the Czech and Slovak Republics since the Velvet Revolution. He has helped develop Liberal Judaism in these countries and acted as consultant rabbi to congregations in Prague, Brno and Bratislava. He was Chair of the European Union for Progressive Judaism and is currently Vice President and Chair of the European Beit Din.

Rabbi Goldstein was a long-time friend and colleague of Rabbi Harry Jacobi.
