Mitzvah Month November 2025

BUILDING BRIDGES

Following on from the success of Mitzvah month 2024 at SPS we are joining again with charity partners and in the theme of Mitzvah Day, we are “Building Bridges” with some new partners, including UK Hong Kongers .  Join us through the month with volunteering opportunities and celebrate with our Mitzvah Day Tea on 23rd November (see below for further details).

Mitzvah Day

Mitzvah Day is an annual day of social action (we do a month) that encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and volunteer for good causes. Founded in the UK in 2005, Mitzvah Day is inspired by the Jewish values of "tikkun olam" (repairing the world) and "gemilut chasadim" (acts of kindness). While rooted in Jewish tradition, the event is open to everyone, fostering interfaith cooperation and promoting community spirit.

Each year, thousands of volunteers participate in a wide range of projects, encouraging hands-on involvement and focusing on making a positive impact at a grassroots level.  The aim?  To inspire ongoing volunteerism, turning small acts of kindness into sustainable change. Through its initiatives, Mitzvah Day highlights the power of community collaboration, showing how simple acts can make a big difference in addressing social issues and building stronger, more inclusive communities.

JW3 in Northwest London

JW3 is a dynamic community centre in North West London, open to everyone regardless of their background religion or identity.  Dedicated to celebrating Jewish culture and heritage, alongside community engagement with the wider society, it offers a wide array of programs and activities (cultural events, social activities, educational programs and family programs) as well as Partnership programmes supporting refugees, new citizens and asylum seekers

At JW3, social action is not just something that is done, it’s a living expression of a mission to bring people together, strengthen communities, and build a better, more connected society. As a non-profit Jewish community centre and charity, JW3 relies on the generosity of donors and the dedication of our volunteers to make this work possible.

Volunteering can be for packing, delivering food parcels and cooking hot meals. Partnering with Feast!, JW3 volunteers come together three times a week to prepare and deliver hot and nutritious food to members of the local Camden community and people suffering from homelessness in the local area. Cooking takes place Tuesday evenings 5pm – 9pm, Wednesday mornings 9.30am - 1.30pm and Thursday mornings 9.30am - 1.30pm.

If you have questions or would like more information, please email mailto:volunteering@jw3.org.uk.  To join our team of amazing volunteers please sign up to our email database, and you will be the first to receive information about volunteering opportunities!

The Karen Morris Memorial Trust

The importance of family support during a period of illness is well recognised; research shows that a strong bond between patient and family can be a crucial factor in the success of a treatment. Not only does the patient benefit – the family also copes better. Yet, due to a lack of affordable, appropriate accommodation, patients are often isolated during periods of extended hospital treatment.  Karen’s Homes from Home provides a caring and supportive environment for patients and their carer’s at this the most challenging of times. In doing so the KMMT allows increasing complex life-saving cancer therapies to be delivered with the full support of friends and family

“My dad was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. The daily drive to and from hospital was physically and mentally exhausting for my mum. The KMMT accommodation lifted a huge stress from mum’s life. The once exhausting drive switched to a short walk. It gave my mum new energy to fight for dad and allowed her to be with him from early morning to late at night. Dad could not have fought so hard without her being there.”

Come and meet representatives from this worthwhile charity at our Mitzvah Day Tea.  Bring a small gift or a nearly new toy / teddy for a tombola or buy a raffle ticket and support this worthwhile charity.

Noah's Ark Hospice

Founded in 2008 and operating across north and central London and Herts Valley, Noah's Ark Hospice is a vital charity dedicated to supporting children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions and their families and helping them to enjoy the time they have together.

The hospice provides a range of services in the family home, in the community and at their specially designed building, The Ark, offering respite care, emotional support, and end-of-life care, all tailored to the unique needs of each child

In addition to direct care for the unwell child, Noah's Ark offers support for families through counselling, bereavement services, and practical help, acknowledging the difficulties experienced by the whole family, including siblings.  This year, SPS has once again partnered with this worthwhile charity to purchase and wrap gifts for siblings.  In 2024 we purchased and wrapped 86 presents – let’s see if we can beat that in 2025!  Gift lists can be found here.  Please contact mitzvahdayadmin@sps.uk.com for delivery address and instructions. Gifts will be wrapped at our Mitzvah Day Tea on 23rd November (for full details see below)
